HOW TO WRITE A GSL
Have you ever admired those amazing confident delegates who deliver the best speeches?
But wait a minute! A Lot of them aren’t smarter than you or are not that well versed with the agenda. They are not even more educated than you! So what is it?
What it comes down to, is there more skillful way of speaking and presenting their research. In this blog I will be sharing with you little tricks and tips that will help you play the game of perfection and you can deliver one of the best GSL speeches in the committee!!
In Model United Nations, the General Speakers’ List is the first speech given by delegates to set the tone of the committee.
Through GSL each delegate presents their country’s stance on the topics being discussed. Students put forward laws, ideologies, policies of their portfolio, introduce proposed solutions, and set the stage for further debate and negotiations.
Following are the strategies that will help you ace a GSL speech and play that game of perfection.
Your GSL might not be perfect but it can always win the hearts of the EB members and create an impact in the committee.
- Introduction: What those delegates never seem to miss is, putting forward their stance assertively. Through an introduction they present their portfolio’s stance and opinions on the ongoing issue. They are so sure of what their nation wants and do NOT settle for anything else. Do you want to have the same strong vibe as theirs? Make sure the content of your speech follows your country’s foreign policy. Never ever present someone else’s views. STICK TO YOUR OWN IDEAS!
- Opening Statement: The first sight of you is a brilliant holograph. The first word you utter can affect others’ perception of you, and hence create an impression of how good of a delegate you are. So do you wish to grab everyone’s attention in a positive way? It really isn’t that hard. Start with a quotation related to the theme or a compelling anecdote or pose a thought provoking question or just make a dramatic statement. This alone will do the trick and make a huge difference about your first impression.
- Research: The only way to be ahead of everyone else is RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH. You must represent your country by briefly explaining its policies, laws, ideas, and events on the agenda. The same requires good research.
- Social Impact: There is one thing that those amazing confident delegates never miss, CREATING AN IMPACT. They focus on the sentimental values that their material reflects when they deliver their speeches. They emphasize on the social impact and add a social touch to their work. This makes their speech much more impactful. You know how every action has a consequence which may affect or cause collateral damage. EXACTLY!! focus on the social side of the issue in a few lines and try to make it sound sentimental.
- Clarity: Understand the agenda and the key points you have to focus on. Tailor your speech to what matters to the committee and to the other delegates. This makes your content more relevant and engaging. YOU as a delegate should be clear and collected with your ideas and research. The more organized and clear you are with your research, the more confident you will be!
- Voice Modulation: If you want to leave your fellow delegates amazed you need to grasp attention. For creating an impact you need people to listen to what you say, you need to make your presence felt. Don’t know how to do that? I got you. A confident delegate is often the one who stands tall, speaks loud and clearly and keeps the committee engaging. It’s simple, all you have to do is, be loud and change your voice modulation. Don’t overdo it because it can end up sounding like an anchoring script.
- Providing Evidence: Remember to always use relevant data to back up your points. For ex. If the agenda is related to climate change, cite recent statistics on rising temperature and pollution. Always use credible sources like the United Nations, World Bank, World Health Organisation etc.
- Connectivity: Connecting the dots can often be a hard task for many delegates. So how will you go about it?Just ensure that the content of your speech is related to the agenda and you clearly connect each and every detail. Let your words act as glue binding every little thing and detail you speak of.
- Call for Collaboration: Do you think you alone can help bring world peace? Do you think you alone can combat terrorism? WELL, YOU CAN’T. Neither can I. Change is a global issue that affects every country. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that controlling a global health crisis requires international collaboration on vaccine development and public health. Always remember, TEAMWORK can make a DREAM WORK. Therefore by effectively illustrating the limitations of solo efforts and the necessity of collaboration, you can make a compelling case for why joint action is essential in your MUN speech.
